Artist Statement
My statement in art is colour because colour is important to a painting. Moreover, colour attracts attention to the painting and holds your interest. Explosive colour turns heads. Paintings lacking in bright vibrant colour, lack in zeal. In my paintings, I exploit colour. One can say that I am a painter of colour.
I am the type of artist that is not narrow-minded; for example, I paint both contemporary and traditional landscape paintings. My artwork shows quality in both areas of art. Some of the artists who inspired me are Claude Monet, Salvador Dali, Picassco, John Singer Sergeant, M.C. Escher, Auguste Rodin, and Michelangelo. From these, I learned impressionism and creativity, which I borrow for my paintings.
I taught myself to draw at a young age, starting with scenes from the pub owned by my family. I formally learned to paint at Sligo Institute of Technology and gained expertise at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
I taught myself contemporary painting from studying great artists like Picassco, Rodin, Dali, Duchamp, Kazimir Malevich, John Klee and Jackson Pollock. By looking at these artists' paintings, I improvised and developed my own style of contemporary art. My works are surreal in nature and are inspired by our natural surroundings and spiritual influences. Oil paints and sand are used to create unusual images with rough textures.
